Title: Trent Feedering
bof - September 23, 2008 10:18 AM (GMT)
Now I have been told by many that the Trent is on the upswing again, but you have to admit that its still a long way from its hayday. At least according to my local tackle shops stock of specialist kit for it.
Back in the day, so many anglers went down to the tidal Trent each week that every tackle shop from Leeds to Loughborough carried feeders that could cope with the big flows.
But not now!
I have been ringing round, and going online, for bits of kit for this weekends do, mainly what I call Big Pig feeders, ie a 3oz to 4oz cage or open ended feeder. Frankly I might as well be talking in Latin for all the response I got, and when I asked for "Dead Cows" (a type of clip on lead of between 1 and 3oz), I could feel the "who is this idiot?" expression coming down the phone line.
Okay, I could get big feeders (Fox do a nice finned blockend), but the weights attached were minute by tidal Trent standards.
So where do you lot get your Trent kit from?

Had a few helpfull replies for the same question on the YF website, so all is not all doom and gloom with the tackle.
Terri at Feeders Direct has promised to get me out of difficulty with their basic strong feeders, (Big Pig open ended ones in fact).
But the heaviest they come in is 3 to 4oz sizes. If the flow is too much for them, then I will be in bother, as I have found just 2 x 1.5oz dead cows in my kit, and they are so old I think I got them second hand from Dick Clegg! :D
I can forsee a visit to a builders merchant coming on tomorrow. ;)

All the shops round here tend to stock big feeders for the trent. I will go and get a few extras and some dead cows bof so not to worry if they don`t arrive. I just can`t believe they didn`t know what dead cows were.

Dead Cows ?
Think about it, who do you let answer the phone in a local tackle shop? The assistant thats who, he being usually the quickest off the mark anyway, (the boss knows to hang back till he knows who it is thats ringing). :D
Then remember that the majority of younger assistants werent around when the Trent was in its hayday, (hell, I still had hair it was that long ago), and few of them out this way have done anything but fish a pole on a puddle anyway. :(
Thanks for offer of the back ups of the Feeders etc., I will be on the forum on Friday for the tides, so I will be able to let you know then. :)
I have just been sorting out my rucksack by the way, making sure I had a few 3 and 4 oz leads (the heaviest I usually run to), and found that I have been doing my usual "just in case" packing again. Slipping in a few here and there has resulted in me turfing out 3lb of 4 oz leads alone!
Maybe its time for a bit of a clear out?

Does the local newspaper give the height of the tide as well as the high tide time* John?
BOF ;)
* I am assuming its the high tide time, not local slack water time.
